On the morning of May 1, Kalinka hosted competitions for the accuracy of landing. We were also invited to participate. The draw was carried out with the help of jars of juice. But in connection with our flight, we were first. For the first time I take part in any competitions and of course I was very interested. To Alexey the idea to take part in competitions too was liked. The task was to get into the drawn square on the runway with minimal deviations, while on takeoff and landing clearly to withstand the direction and after leveling it was forbidden to use the ore. It seems to be simple — it seemed to me. But on the training circle I touched a little before the square. I changed the method of calling and the scoring circles did something like quite well, according to Alexey, at the first landing we clearly got in the square, and on the second one a meter and a half there was a flight, but apparently somewhere else we made mistakes in the competition and in the general standings we took the honorary 14th place. :-). For me it’s a lesson that you have to learn to fly better. It’s a pity that I do not know what mistakes I made in the competitions.

After flying off the competition, we started collecting. It was necessary to fly faster. Estimated time of distillation was slightly more than 5h, and if we take into account that we are going to meet the sun, we had to hurry.

The weather forecast along the route showed that the weather would be good. Small clouds can be at an altitude of 2000m above Sikhote-Alin and fog over the sea, but otherwise everything is fine. Analysis of the wind on the heights said that you need to climb 2000m, there will be a fair wind. Ha … Get out there again … Well, the mountain range recommended flying at a height of not less than 2 km. Let’s try, I decided. If today we do not go through, then we’ll hang for a week. Call up with the Soviet Harbor, find out the actual weather for them — it completely coincides with our forecast.

Once again, we check everything and taxi to the start.

The plane is slowly gaining speed. Separation, aging and turn into a set. The flight hour is at full throttle. We collected 800m. Around the haze, piloting is very neat.

Again, we begin to gain altitude in the dynamics. The wind is favorable. We approach the mountains. Using dynamic flows near the mountains, we quickly jump out almost 2000m. This is good, but what will happen next? In the mountains hanging clouds. Not dense, rather like a haze, but you can not see anything ahead. A strong wind bolt rushes up and down 200-300 meters, making it difficult to pilot the instruments.

It seems that you can see by yourself, but sometimes the slopes above us flutter along the sides. Oh, I can not enjoy the beauty of Sikhote-Alin.

I’m piloting on the horizon, on GPS constantly monitoring the course taking into account the circumvention of the peaks. It is good that these mountains are old enough and the passages between them are large.

Alex tells us that we have ice. Here, an infection! And you can not get out lower. Again, against a strong wind is also not an option, because we are already in the middle of the ridge. Okay, let’s see the dynamics of icing. The cloudiness is not so dense as to give a strong ice. The windshield is still clean. Heating LDPE and carburetor included at maximum.

We pass near Tardoki Jani, leaving in the clouds. This giant for some reason reminded me of an illustration from a children’s fairy tale about Dr. Aybolit, where Aibolit climbs just on such a mountain to cure the eagle. 100 km remains until the Soviet Harbor, in front of one more mountain, which we go to the right.

Visibility is better, and now the valley opens before us.

The sky is clean, in some places there are clouds from which there are precipitation.

The sea is ahead. In the bay to the Soviet Harbor there is a large ship. The picture is simply mesmerizing. More than 2 hours have passed, all fuel canisters are pumped into tanks, the track speed is under 200 km / h, the engine runs smoothly. I stroke the visor of the dashboard and say affectionate words to our aircraft. I remember how Andrei Borisovich Volkov strokes and thanks Il-14.

Ahead more than 100km flight over the sea. We climb to 2100m. Well … Now wait 40 minutes, and we’ll be over the island. The plane freezes in the sky. After a strong bump in the mountains now it seems that the air has become a lot thicker and we seem to hang in syrup. Time has almost stopped and also it is very slow. On the right and in front the water is covered with fog. It is not high, but the island is very dense. It looks like a takeaway. Shakhtersk is open. For 35 km to the shore, we saw mountains sticking out of the clouds. Yes, the fog from the sea comes to the shore, rests on the mountains, thickens and so stands.

You can exhale. We go first along the western coast of Sakhalin, and then we pass to the eastern coast. The southern part of the island is in the palm of your hand.

Alexey shows me the Bay of Silence, tells about mountains calling each peak. He just glows with happiness! How cool that is. We make a pass over his stepfather’s house at an altitude of 700m and now we are already flying in the valley. Ahead of the airfield «Eagle» Alexander Dukhanin.

We make a passage, Alexander on the radio dictates where to touch, the box and we are on the landing line. Smooth landing. We arrived, the task is completed!

On the ground, we are met by Elena, the spouse of Alexei. A wonderful couple. Elena very strongly supports Alexei. Alexander Dukhanin has already prepared everything for the parking of Cessna. For mooring are concrete blocks.

And then I’m waiting for excursions to the airfield and the island. I will not describe in detail the travel of the next day, just look at the pictures from Sakhalin.
